In a
shocking statement on January 15, Rick Santorum declared that he believed the
nation’s colleges were responsible for a “sea of antagonism towards
Christianity” and “indoctrinating” more liberal ideas such as the legality of
gay marriage, abortion, and pornography.
Santorum, a former republican United States Senator from Pennsylvania
and presidential candidate, stated that gay marriage, abortion and pornography
are “symptoms to the fundamental issue that we've gotten away from the truth
and the 'Truth-Giver.'” He said that
these symptoms derived from the culture presented by Hollywood and the schools
in the United States, especially colleges.
Despite receiving an undergraduate degree from Pennsylvania State University, an M. B. A. from the University of Pittsburgh, and a J. D. from the Dickinson School of Law, Santorum downplayed the importance of receiving a college education. Last February he said, "President Obama once said he wants everybody in America to go to college. What a snob!" Santorum described President Obama’s goal for all of the United States to attend college as an attempt to push the liberal agenda saying, "There are good, decent men and women who go out and work hard every day and put their skills to the test that aren't taught by some liberal college professor trying to indoctrinate him. I understand why he wants you to go to college. He wants to remake you in his image."
In my opinion, for a person in power such as Mr. Santorum to so irrationally push people against education is utterly despicable. As a 2008 study shows, college students are no more likely to accept liberal ideas than any member of their age group that does not attend college. Based on the blatant hypocrisy shown by Mr. Santorum’s three college degrees, I believe that the motives of his statements and ideals should be called into question.

I completely agree with your opinion. The fact that Rick Santorum would downplay college education that much is very ridiculous. In my opinion, college education will get you very far in life and can serve as a major stepping stone in your young age. Although this isn't the case in every situation, most people become more successful in life when they go to college. If anything, Mr. Santorum should be encouraging people to go to college.
ReplyDeleteI think this opinion of Mr. Santorum's is appalling. As a person of his standing, this seems like he did not think this issue out well. If no one goes to college, how will the country move forward in any way? The college lifestyle is not a reason to discourage students to attend higher schooling.

ReplyDeleteI guess this is why Sanctorum was only a presidential candidate. Besides, based off of my personal experience, I'd say by college, most kids know what they are all about (liberal, conservative/democratic, republican) and have already formulated their opinions.
ReplyDeleteHypocrite. The "Truth-Giver" he is referring to wants each and every one of us to use our talents and gifts to the highest of our potential and for most people, this would mean going to college...
Rick Santorum seems to be a little off his rocker in this statement. Recent studies have shown that countries like Brazil, Hong Kong, and others worldwide have educational systems growing three times as fast as the Unites State’s. This country needs more people to attend school so we can keep improving our economy and countrywide intelligence. I understand that there are many hard working Americans who do not go through college, but saying Obama is a “snob” for encouraging college is hurting the country. Even the Church encourages Christians to go out and learn of new ideas to help them get perspective on their religion and life. America needs people seeking a higher education if we are trying to be more successful and get out of the debt trouble we are currently in.
ReplyDeleteOh, Rick Santorum. I see this as a "Rick Santorum: bigoted, socially conservative, white knight of the traditionalistic Catholic Church versus the World" kind of situation. I mean, you have to applaud him for trying. I mean, what can you do? You can blame everything you want on us Richard, but we're the majority and quite frankly, what comes bumbling out of your mouth doesn't even make sense. Seriously, where does this guy get this stuff?
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you (Harrison), Tommy, and Bobby. And what's funniest about this is the fact that one, he's an educated man, and two, he's a political figure. You'd think he'd say the exact opposite of what he says on national television. I'm actually glad, though, that there are crazies out there like Ricky here making fools out of themselves for all the world to see. I mean, honestly, how much more boring would politics be if everyone agreed with each other and we didn't have loopy political figures like Santorum saying that colleges are corrupting the minds of our youth and that gay people choose to be gay? How would he even know that? Wouldn't you have to be gay to know whether or not homosexual people "choose" to be gay or straight? I mean, I'm just saying.
